You can hear on first listen that "Drown, Yeah" is not a regularly recorded album. It is constantly fighting with its self-imposed restrictions, winning over them with wit and creativity, and sometimes also being defeated by them.
Originally, these restrictions were due to the circumstances: I spent one year in Beijing from 2011 to 2012 and had no access to my musical equipment at that time. The only thing I had was "Li-Li", a 50 dollar chinese brand acoustic guitar. I started writing the first songs in early 2012. I did not even have a laptop with me, so I just recorded them with an iPhone, adding layer upon layer of sound with Li-Li. I planned that all this would later be played by electric guitars, synthesizers, bass.
But wow, the iPhone-recordings sounded strangely enchanting! Totally indifferent to sound and surface, purely "song". I decided to regard the restrictions as the conceptual framework for the album and from then on did not allow any sound-source other than my body or whatever I could do with Li-Li: picking, plucking, strumming, bowing, scratching, hitting,... 5 months later, "Drown, Yeah" was finished, finally with a laptop, an old microphone, some freeware software... but still only with Li-Li.
I could have simply done the one-man-and-his-guitar-folk-song-thing, but "Drown, Yeah" is something different. It is calm, reduced and low-fi, but it is obviously not a folk-record, it has a sound of its own. With its "one instrument only"-concept and especially the recurring lyrical theme of "Drowning" you might want to call it a concept-album. But maybe you will just call it an unusual but enjoyable pop-record.
Liv Lapaz is a german singer-songwriter, currently living and working in Berlin. He is a manic autodidact and ecclectic creative. Self-produced and independent, his work constantly shifts between pop and art, while in its best moments it is both.
Liv uses any instrument he can get his hands on, although his 2012 album "Drown, Yeah" was composed and recorded with a cheap, chinese brand acoustic guitar, only. His songs deal with desires and aspiration, a search for truth, freedom and love. His lyrics remain vague, aiming to provide a trigger for the listener’s own imaginations and memories. The musical influences shaping his work are wide and range from masters of reduction like the Young Marble Giants, Mark Hollis and Elliott Smith's early albums to Jeff Buckley’s floating chords and Trent Reznor’s calm moments.
Liv's favorite albums are "Grace", "Neon Golden" and "Pornography". His favorite movies are "Blade Runner", "Chinatown" and "2001". His favorite books are "Doctor Faustus", "Moby Dick" and "Heart of Darkness". He loves lists.
All you lovers who prefer your music "physical", you can now order the Limited Edition Box. This is the only available CD-version of "Drown, Yeah" and it is limited to 100 pieces. When they are gone, they are gone...
The beautiful box contains a signed Digi-Pack with the CD-album, and a download-link to the original iPhone demo-recordings.
BUT LISTEN TO THIS:
Every Box also contains a piece of "Li-Li", the acoustic guitar
and only instrument that was used on the album. Li-Li was
smashed after recording was finished. It was then cut into
exactly 100 pieces, one piece for each Limited Edition Box.
So, what you get is not only the music, but a unique piece of the instrument that I used to write, compose and record "Drown, Yeah".
Price: 19 € (plus shipping, depending on where you are located)
